What is the Audiovisual Bank of Testimonies?
It is an archive of oral history of the Memorial Democràtic (Democratic Memory of Catalonia), which includes interviews on the subjects and period of reference of this institution (1931-1980).Political memories, life stories, personal and family experiences of the Second Republic, the Civil War, Franco’s dictatorship, exile, the struggle for democratic freedom and the Spanish transition to democracy, all have a place in this archive.
It is an oral memory archive which records the plurality of the memories of Catalonia’s recent history and which handles the cataloguing and dissemination of the interviews in an innovative way.
Audiovisual Bank of Testimonies’ vocation
One of its purposes is to become a benchmark archive of oral testimonies, for both researchers interested in the 20th century and students who are studying recent history as well as the general public interested in discovering history.
The Audiovisual Bank of Testimonies is a living project that continues to expand research in oral history and to record interviews.Research projects on oral testimonies and people who wish to record their testimony have, thanks to this archive, a place where they can leave their interviews.
The Bank in numbers
By June 2014, the Audiovisual Bank of Testimonies included 918 interviews from 72 oral testimony research projects, which total 1,121 hours of audiovisual recordings.Only part of these interviews and projects can be consulted in their entirety:22 projects that contain 403 interviews. We are working to make the remaining testimonies available to the public and to add new interviews.
The recordings are the result of oral testimony research projects of the Democratic Memory, of projects subsidised by the former General Directorate for Democratic Memory and of donations from researchers.
All of the interviews are recorded in audiovisual format and are fully transcribed in the original language of the testimony. The subtitles in other languages are automatic and could contain mistakes.
To reuse the interviews for publications, documentaries, television, exhibitions, etc, please refer to the legal information section.
