Memorial Democràtic Thesaurus
The Memorial Democràtic Thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary on the contemporary history of Catalonia, designed specifically for the Audiovisual Bank of Testimonies, the institution’s oral history archive.
To create it, the Tesaurus d’Història de Catalunya (Thesaurus of the History of Catalonia) of SIBHIL·LA-UAB, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona’s Bibliographic Information Service and Documentation of History, Language, Literature and Art of Catalonia, was used as a starting point.
The decision to create a specific thesaurus stems from the inexistence of documentary languages adapted to the historic timeframe that the Memorial Democràtic covers.
Structure of the thesaurus
The thesaurus is structured in 4 main areas or micro-disciplines, which respond to 4 questions:when (chronological descriptors), what (thematic descriptors), who (onomastic descriptors) and where (toponymic descriptors).
The chronological descriptors have a time frame established by the law on Memorial Democràtic, from14/04/1931 to 20/03/1980. This limit is exceeded on occasion by the actual testimonies.
Publication and display
The complete version of the thesaurus has not been published on paper but is available to users, who can download it, either completely or separately in alphabetical or hierarchical versions.
There is however a second way of viewing the thesaurus, linked to the content, which enables semantic searches on the website. This is a hierarchical presentation, where only 1,776 of the terms used in the thesaurus are visible, together with generic terms to which the descriptors are linked.
